Overview

The full picture

Belize is the Caribbean's adventure playground and Central America's most accessible destination for English-speaking couples. The country occupies a unique geographic niche: a Caribbean coastline with islands (cayes) and the world's second-largest barrier reef on one side, and a mountainous jungle interior filled with Maya ruins, howler monkeys, and underground river systems on the other.

For destination weddings, Belize offers two distinct experiences. The coastal and island weddings take place on Ambergris Caye (the largest and most developed island), Caye Caulker (smaller, more bohemian), or private island resorts scattered along the reef. These venues deliver white-sand beaches, turquoise Caribbean water, and overwater ceremony platforms. The jungle interior offers a completely different aesthetic: eco-lodges surrounded by rainforest, ceremonies in front of Maya temples, and receptions under thatched-roof palapas with the sounds of the jungle as a soundtrack.

Belize's major advantage over other Caribbean and Central American destinations is language. As a former British colony, English is the official language — every vendor, every government office, and every service provider communicates in English. This eliminates the language barriers that complicate weddings in Mexico, Costa Rica, and other popular Latin American destinations.

The country is also remarkably intimate. With a population of only 400,000, Belize has no mass tourism infrastructure — no mega-resorts, no cruise ship ports overflowing into wedding venues, no tourist crowds. This means your wedding guests have the beach, the reef, and the jungle practically to themselves.

Legal

Marriage requirements

Belize is one of the easiest countries for foreigners to marry. Requirements: valid passports, proof of single status (or divorce decree if applicable), and arrival in Belize at least 3 days before the ceremony. Apply for a marriage license through the Registrar General's office — most resorts and wedding planners handle the paperwork. No blood tests or residency requirement. The ceremony must be performed by a licensed marriage officer.

Local tips

From people who’ve done it

  1. 01

Book during dry season (November–April) — the wet season brings afternoon downpours and higher humidity, though mornings are often clear.

  2. 02

Combine a coast-and-jungle itinerary for guests: 3 nights on Ambergris Caye for beach and reef, then 2 nights in the Cayo District for jungle adventures.

  3. 03

Arrange a group snorkeling or diving trip to the Belize Barrier Reef — it is a UNESCO World Heritage site and the most spectacular natural attraction in the country.

  4. 04

Fly guests to Ambergris Caye via local puddle-jumper flights from Belize City (15 minutes) rather than taking the water taxi (75 minutes) — the views are spectacular and the time savings are significant.

  5. 05

Include a traditional Belizean Creole dinner with rice and beans, stew chicken, and fry jacks as a rehearsal dinner — the cuisine is flavorful and affordable.

  6. 06

Budget for private island or boat transfers if choosing a remote caye venue — water logistics are the biggest planning variable in Belize.

FAQs

Frequently asked

How do guests get to Belize?

Philip Goldson International Airport (Belize City) has direct flights from Miami (2.5 hours), Houston (2.5 hours), Dallas, Charlotte, Denver, and Los Angeles. From Belize City, local flights or water taxis reach the cayes in 15 to 75 minutes.

Is Belize safe?

Tourist areas (Ambergris Caye, Caye Caulker, Cayo District, Placencia) are safe and well-established. Belize City has higher crime rates — most visitors transit through without spending significant time there. Standard travel precautions apply.

What currency does Belize use?

The Belize dollar (BZD), pegged at 2:1 to the US dollar. US dollars are accepted everywhere in tourist areas. Credit cards are widely accepted at hotels and restaurants. ATMs are available on Ambergris Caye and in towns.

Is Belize expensive for a destination wedding?

Moderate — cheaper than most Caribbean islands but more expensive than mainland Central American countries. A full wedding for 50 guests at a boutique resort costs $8,000–$18,000. Guest accommodation averages $150–$350 per night at mid-range to luxury properties.

What is the best island for a wedding?

Ambergris Caye has the most developed wedding infrastructure (planners, florists, photographers, restaurants). Caye Caulker is more casual and bohemian. Private island resorts (Cayo Espanto, Gladden Private Island) offer exclusivity for smaller guest lists.
